Household

House manager or butler — which does your home need?

It's one of the most common questions we're asked, and a fair one — the two roles overlap, and in smaller households a single person may do both. But they are distinct disciplines, and knowing the difference helps you hire the right person for how your home actually runs.

The butler: service and presence

A butler is the face of service in the home. Their world is the table and the cellar, the welcome of guests, the rhythm of meals and occasions, the personal attention to the principals and their visitors. When a butler is excellent, the experience of being in your home feels effortless and considered at every turn.

The house manager: operations and oversight

A house manager runs the home as an operation. They hire and supervise staff, manage budgets and vendors, oversee maintenance and security, coordinate calendars and projects, and keep the whole machine running quietly in the background. Where the butler is presence, the house manager is structure.

A simple rule of thumb: a butler looks after the experience; a house manager looks after the enterprise.

Large estates often need both, working in concert — the house manager directing, the butler delivering. A busy single residence may need one capable person who leans toward whichever side matters most to you. The right answer depends on the size of your home, the number of staff, and where you most want to feel the difference.

If you're not sure, that's exactly the conversation we're here to have — we'll help you scope the role before we ever propose a candidate.
